Sabina Kumar, DO, presented the poster, “HER-ICI Michigan: Highlighting Effective Results in ICI-guided PCI Among Female Patients in the State of Michigan After BMC2 Initiatives” during the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) Scientific Sessions, May 1 – 3, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Multiple randomized trials have shown that intracoronary imaging (ICI)-guided PCI improves outcomes. However, these trials enrolled a minority of women. Dr. Kumar and colleagues used BMC2 data to evaluate differences in the uptake of ICI-guided PCI by patient sex alongside a statewide quality improvement initiative intended to increase ICI use.

In 2020, BMC2 implemented a multifaceted initiative to increase ICI use during PCI across all 48 non-federal PCI hospitals in Michigan. The initiative –spanning several years – included educational programs, reporting of comparative institution-level ICI use, and performance benchmarking.

Rates of ICI-guided PCI increased to a similar degree in male and female patients, suggesting the initiative ensures access to quality health care. This quality improvement framework could be considered in other states to increase the use of ICI-guided PCI, promoting healthy communities.
